Frequently Asked Questions About Depression Articles

My father got involved in a car crash that took his life five years ago. Before passing away, he told the paramedics not to revive him and make sure that his kidney would go to me because I needed a transplant. I did not have time to mourn for him because the surgery had to be done immediately. And when I woke up, he was already six feet underground.

The kidney transplant turned out to be successful, and my mother and sisters wanted to throw a party for me, but I did not feel like doing it. In my head, there was no reason to celebrate. I kept thinking, “Did Dad refuse to be resuscitated so that he could save my life?”

When the doctors released me, my mother insisted that I should go back to my childhood home so that she could look after me. However, I said that I would feel more comfortable in my own space. She reluctantly agreed, so I told her that she could come on weekends when I had no work.

The thing was, I only made my family believe that I went back to my everyday life. On weekdays, I would spend most of my time at the cemetery, sitting by my father’s grave. On weekends, I would pretend to be my old self and hang out with my mother and sisters. I still could not do physically taxing activities due to my previous surgery, so we would mostly stay in the house or dine out at the nearby restaurants.

When I Got Diagnosed With Depression

Despite my white lies, I still did not think that anything’s wrong with me mentally. I was in the mourning phase; I thought it was only normal for a grieving daughter to skip work and practically do nothing else. Unfortunately for me, my sister’s friend worked at the same publishing company I was employed at, and she raised her concern about me not going back to work even after my leave ended two weeks ago.

I went home from the cemetery one Wednesday and found my entire family in my living room. I was not surprised that they managed to enter the house because they knew where I hid my spare key. I was surprised by their appearance because it was far from the weekend. But based on their serious faces and how they sat in a semi-circle and left the middle seat for me, I got nervous.

“Hey, what’s up? You should’ve told me you’re coming. I would’ve—”

“Sit down, honey,” Mom cut me off firmly yet gently.

It was a cold winter evening, but it felt like I was in a hot seat as they stared at me with those unreadable eyes.

“Is there anything wrong?” I asked.

“Diane called me,” my sister started. “You said that you had gone back to work, but she said you didn’t. Where have you been going?”

I sighed. Looking at my feet, I replied, “Dad’s grave. I had been going there every day because I didn’t get to say goodbye as you all did.”

“Do you think Dad would be happy to see you wasting your career like this? He gave you a new life – you should live it,” my mother uttered, her voice shaking.

Her words felt like a smack on the head. I did not think of it that way in the past. I did not consider how Dad might feel sad about my actions. After agreeing to see a psychologist – and eventually getting diagnosed with depression – I returned to work. This time, I asked my manager if I could handle the blog department to start writing articles about my depressive experiences. She readily agreed, and that’s how my healing journey through writing started.

Depression can be caused by a number of different factors depending on age, gender, and more. The four most common causes of depression are abuse, illness, genetics, death, or loss of a loved one. These four common causes for depression have been found to cause a significant portion of the depression rates.

What are the most effective ways to treat depression research papers?

There are several research papers published on the matter of depression treatment. Studies that delve in deep on different ways of treating depression and its effectiveness. Studies show that the most effective treatment methods for depression are counseling one-on-one, CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy, social skills therapy, psychodynamic therapy, supportive counseling, behavioral activation, and problem-solving therapy. Of course, you must consult with a doctor to determine the best treatment that is most effective for you.

What are the general methods used to treat depression?

Depression is mostly treated through therapy, counseling, and medications. It is highly recommended that we have a strong support group of our closest family and friends who can support us during this time. It is also important to do what we used to love and be happy with as a slow transition into everyday life. Talking it out will help heal from depression, so make sure that you reach out for help when you know that you need it.

What is the primary cause of depression?

There is no one primary cause of depression. It can be caused by many different external and internal factors that may differ from person to person. There are cases caused by hormones and chemical imbalances in the brain, and there are cases caused by trauma abuse. Generally speaking, depression can be caused by many things without really being able to identify a specific one.

What is the most significant cause of depression?

There are many causes that researchers point to when it comes to depression because no one is sure what causes it and why it happens the way it does. However, there are only a handful of causes that reoccur. These causes are Trauma or abuse, genetics or family history, illness, chemical imbalances in the brain, and hormonal changes.

What are the four types of depression?

The four types of depression are Major, Chronic, Manic, and Persistent. Major depression is the most severe of all four types where you most likely are constantly in a depressed mood, and you might have lost interest in daily life. On the other hand, chronic lasts the longest as it can stay with you for an average of a year. Manic is also known as bipolar depression, where you might feel extreme manias and extreme lows or both at the same time. Lastly, seasonal is a major depression that happens seasonally.

Does depression count as a disability?

Yes, depression counts as a disability because it causes a person to be unable to do any task physically or even enjoy daily life. Under the Americans with disabilities act, depression is also considered a disability. It significantly affects your moods and your ability to work or live life as normally as possible.

How do I know if I’m bipolar?

It is always best and most recommended to have a doctor’s consultation because going on the internet looking for signs and symptoms might lead to a self-diagnosis that can further harm you. However, to see if you need help, look out for signs of high mania periods and extremely low periods of depression, or it can also happen when you are thrilled yet extremely sad. Other symptoms include impulsivity, anger management issues, difficulty in controlling emotions, and more.

What are the two types of depression?

There are multiple types of depression; however, two of the most common types are major and chronic depression. Major depression is the most severe of the kinds where you are feeling very down in the dumps, and your ability to live daily life as usual as you used to is put to a stop. Chronic depression lasts the longest as it can go on for a year or more with the same experiences.

What part of your brain is affected by depression?

Three brain areas are affected by depression, your prefrontal cortex, your amygdala, and your hippocampus. Your prefrontal cortex is responsible for emotion regulation, decision making, and memories. Your amygdala facilitates emotional responses. The hippocampus is responsible for cortisol production, which can cause many issues once there is too much of it.

What does a mental breakdown look like?

As we are unique individuals, a mental breakdown can look differently for different people. It can be a person crying their eyes out for hours; it can be a person drinking to death, drug addiction, or just sudden bursts of emotions such as anger and frustration. This means that your mind is shutting down because it can no longer handle the pressure and the stress that they are going through. It is best to ride it out, and it is a sign for you to take a step back and relax.

What is a simple definition of depression?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a mental illness that negatively affects your mood and daily life. It will cause feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in daily activities. This may lead to many emotional and physical issues that can make things worse for you. So make sure that you can reach out and ask for help.

What is a fancy word for SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder is also known as winter depression because some researchers refer to it as a hibernation of sorts. During this time, patients diagnosed with the disorder grow colder and darker as if going through a fall and a winter phase. Make sure that you can consult with a doctor to make your winter turn into spring once more.

Can depression change your personality?

Yes, depression can change your personality. A person who was once happy and cheerful can turn into someone quiet and sluggish. This is caused by hormonal changes and chemical imbalances in our brains. Once we become depressed, we become isolated and quiet. We might be more withdrawn, and we would lose interest in many activities used to make us happy.

How do you survive depression?

Ensure that you can consult with a doctor to start with a treatment plan that is most effective for you. This will then help avoid further complications, both mentally and physically. Of course, it is also good that you can surround yourself with supportive people who understand that you need help and that you need them during this time of darkness in your life. Also, try and go back into what made you happy or look for a new hobby that can make you feel that passion again.

Final Thoughts

I had gone a long way since my depression diagnosis. After my first blog about my experience, many readers offered their condolences and shared how they related to what I went through. The more blogs I posted, the more followers I got, to the extent that my manager suggested that I do a writing workshop for depressed or grieving people. I did it with my psychologist’s help, and it became a part of the company’s tradition to hold similar seminars every year.

Knowing that I could help other people made me heal faster. I could only hope that Dad’s proud of me.

From Fear To Hobby – More Than Learning A New Skill

It was one of my greatest fears until curiosity peeped in and intervened and turned that fear into a hobby.

Who would ever think that you can turn your fear into a hobby –  hobby that can lead you to the path to finding your passion, passion that bears the fruits of pure endless joy?

Art Scares Me

When my friends learned that I enrolled in an art class, they were all shocked, and had the same response, a big “WHAT!!!???”

Since elementary grades, I always had this fear of coming to our art class.  It instantly made me quiver and nervous.  I hated the idea of drawing, wasting time imagining things to create images, and I was so lacking when it comes to drawing figures and combining and mixing colors.

When my kids were younger, I would sometimes feel guilty that whenever they would ask me to draw something for them, I would tell them to, “Just ask your dad to do that.”  It’s a shame always turning them down and not being able to teach them how to make even simple drawings.

Art expression stimulates narrative. Studies during the past decade underscore that art is not just a “right brain” activity, but actually a “whole brain” activity that stimulates language and storytelling. — Cathy Malchiodi PhD, LPCC, LPAT, ATR-BC, REAT

Is It Fate That Takes Its Course?

Until one day, I impulsively decided to attend an art class when I saw their advertisement from a magazine.

I made my appearance on the first day of the class, still, with the same tension which I used to have during my grade school years.  I worried that I might be the oldest one there, that my classmates who were younger might make fun of me and my work. But it turns out that most of the people who enrolled also had the same curiosity as I did.

The first time the instructor requested us to put out our pen and sketch pad, I saw my hands tremble in fears.  Raising panic began to control my thoughts. It took me a while to have the courage to draw the fruit on his table until I eventually managed to do it.  It’s not a beauty in itself yet, but deep inside me, I knew it’s the start.

Making a good decision requires us to know ourselves. We need to know the things we can live with, the things we cannot compromise on, and the things we can tolerate or get used to. — Nicole S. Urdang, MS, NCC, DHM

Building The Confidence

Months passed, I became less anxious, and I was able to take on complicated tasks our instructor was giving us, like painting gardens, landscapes, and sceneries.  I became more comfortable asking some questions and tips on how to mix and match colors, what better methods to follow in creating figures I want to make, how to better interpret the image in my mind.

My instructor taught me more than one way to mix and match colors.  He told me that it matters that we understand our color wheel, our paints, and the kind of medium we choose to use.   In the world of art, it’s our own imagination. We have the free will to create anything we want, and we can convey and connect our ideas to people with the proper use of these colors.  When an artist makes that kind of connection to his audience, it enriches his soul.

Curiosity-Led Hobby

Reading about older people enrolling in art class triggered that curiosity in me and brought me back in time.   Is it indeed possible?

I did join the class, and I was happy I did it.  I found out that dealing with fears is possible, and you can even enjoy it, turning fear into a hobby.

Art class didn’t only teach me new skills in painting. It taught me a life lesson – that we can overcome fears if we equip ourselves with knowledge.

Creation of knowledge on your own is the best way to learn—children and adults alike will remember more, and know more deeply, material that they have taught to themselves over material explained to them. — Thalia R. Goldstein Ph.D.

Taking my brush to mix colors is a real joy.  With each stroke I make on the plain white canvass, I engage myself in something significant and matching contrasting color into one masterpiece gives my life a new meaning.

An Inked Appeal: Why People Get Tattoos

Reportedly David Beckham misspelled his wife’s name (in Hindi) on the tattoo on his arm and Rihanna has a misspelled Sanskrit prayer on her right hip. I haven’t verified these reports personally, but blame their third grade teachers-blame the schools-they did not teach spelling consciousness! — J. Richard Gentry Ph.D.

A lot of judgment arises when one sees a tattoo. For the longest time, tattoos have been a staple to the more criminal or delinquent lot, commonly being associated with gangs, bikers and prison inmates. Nowadays, normal law-abiding individuals are starting to get inked as well. These are the everyman you meet daily in your community, at work, in school, and just about everywhere.

In case you want to make a career shift after being a psychologist for years and find your place in the tattooing industry, you need to train hard using some of the most excellent tattoo kits that beginners ought to have. They include the products from JRFoto and Solong Tattoo. Keep on reading to understand why they are the best that you can find at present.

Premium Tattoo Kit By JRFoto

JRFoto offers the most delightful experience when it comes to tattooing novices. The latest kit that they have contains eight coil machines of varying designs, ten wrap coils, disposable and non-disposable tips, needles, seven ink bottles, grips, and a power supply that functions in 110 and 220 volts.

What Makes It Great?

Premium Tattoo Kit is more than just a name since you can expect quality in every material you will see in the set. One of the machines that you’ll find in the box is made out of brass, while the others have a vintage appearance. They increase the value of the product you purchase.

Also, it is highly advantageous to know that there are tips and grips crafted from stainless steel within this package. It means that rust will not form on them. Perhaps even when your skills level up, and you can already apply tattoos on humans, you will still want to use these items when practicing designs.

In addition to that, you will not need to order a practice skin independently. JRFoto has it included in the kit, so all you have to do is set up your workspace and begin training. This practice skin is handy, precisely when you want to try tattooing a new design you have created or seen online.

You can never be in the dark about how to use these tools as well since there is a manual available in the form of a DVD. This format is beneficial for people who learn more when viewing visuals instead of reading texts. Hence, the machines can be utilized a lot.

Once practice time is over, you should not be concerned about how you can maintain the items because everything has been pre-packed in specific cases. You can even feel secure that no one, especially the kids, can open this if you store its keys where only you can reach them.

The disadvantage you may notice from this JRFoto tattoo kit is that the power supply provides less amount of power. It is a good thing that you only use it for training purposes since it may not be strong enough to handle an actual work.

In general, this remains as a piece of awesome tattooing equipment that can help you practice your hand movements and grip to offer a remarkable finish product later on.

So you don’t regret your tattoos because any shadow of regret would be policed and dealt with by cognitive dissonance resolution. This is a good thing in many ways – it definitely saves you a lot of money on laser removal surgery. — Bence Nanay Ph.D.

Solong Tattoo Complete Beginner Kit

This tattoo kit is suitable for the most creative artists out there who wish to practice doing different designs using a wide range of colors. It is possible of Solong Tattoo has included a total of 54 inks in the box, along with two coil machines, a power supply, and a collection of grips, needles, tips, etc.

What Makes It Great?

When you start to show interest to the craft, it may be because you want to try re-creating beautiful illustrations on the body at first.

The fact that the kit contains a lot of tattoo inks ensures that you will be able to get used to drawing such designs and know which shade goes with what before you are even allowed to perform it on an actual human being. It will not become difficult for you as well to improve your skills since a thick slab of practice skin comes within the package. What is good about this add-on is that both sides can get tattooed on. Even when every bit of it becomes filled with ink, you can continue to use it.

Furthermore, sanitation matters for the creators of Solong Tattoo. It is evident based on how each tip, grip, needle, and grommet inside the kit has been packed individually to make sure that bacteria cannot stick to them unless the packet is opened.

In case you are unaware of the right way to operate the machine and everything else, the manufacturer has added an instructional booklet that contains all the necessary details about the product.

The colors, no matter how large their quantity is, is too light than what you expect, especially the black hue. If you mostly want to use this shade, you may need to get a separate one from the store. Also, it only has two tattoo machines. It may have been better if they have increased this number.

The Solong Tattoo Kit can help the beginners train in becoming the most efficient artists in town. Although the hues are brighter in comparison to the natural colors, not all brands are kind enough to pack dozens of them in exchange for a small price.

Some who are labeled ‘weird,’ may have an unusual sense of humor, seeing the world through a non-traditional lens, others saddled with social anxiety and may not know how to express themselves in a way that fits in with the cultural norm. Those who view themselves as outcasts and misfits often wonder how to navigate the waters while paddling a leaky boat that they were never taught how to patch. It is those folks who were likely maligned as children who often rise to stardom. — Edie Weinstein, MSW, LSW

In Conclusion
